Multiple Programs - AVP.EXE

Most commonly, avp.exe installs with Kaspersky Antivirus Personal and Antivirus Personal Pro. It is required if you use this antivirus software. Antivirus programs can only scan for viruses they know about. New viruses, trojans and worms appear on the scene each week. So please be sure to keep your virus definitions updated. To do that, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/updates.html.

Avp.exe also installs with America Online's Active Virus Shield. This program promises protection from viruses and spyware. More information can be found at http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp.

Avp.exe also installs with the W32.Depress@mm worm. This is a mass mailing worm that will send itself to everyone in your Microsoft Outlook address book. If you have this worm, avp.exe will appear in your root folder (often c:\). More information can be found at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.depress@mm.html.

Avp.exe also installs with a variant of the Herman.Agent Trojan. This Trojan can steal passwords and can allow a remote user to access your system. More information can be found at http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/pest.aspx?id=453080975.

If you use Kaspersky Antivirus or AOL ActiveVirus Shield, leave avp.exe in place. If you have one of the viruses, you'll want to remove it using WinPatrol. First, kill it under Active Tasks then remove it from your Startup Programs. If running WinPatrol 8.x or later, right click the file then select "Delete file on Reboot".
