Multiple Programs – CONFIG.SYS and CONFIG.EXE

Config.sys is a file that predates the Windows operating system. It was part of MS DOS. It ran when your system was powered on. It supplied information to the disk operating system about your computer system and setup. The file is no longer needed in current versions of Windows but is included for backwards compatibility. If you run WinPatrol 10.x or later, this file may appear in your list of Hidden Files. It is safe to have around. More information can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/mspress/books/sampchap/6271.asp.

Most commonly, config.exe is used as part of the Wise Solutions Installer to determine which operating system is used on the destination machine (the computer that the product would be installed on). The Wise installer is one of the more common installers in use today. Many 3rd party programs you may install on your computer use this software. If you have a config.exe that is described as "Microsoft config file", you may have the KILLFILES.GR trojan. This trojan can delete necessary system files and dll files. If you have this instance of the file, we'd recommend removing it using WinPatrol. First, kill it under Active Tasks then remove it from your Startup Programs.

It's likely that many other programs may use a file called config.exe. In general, these sorts of programs should not have to be running all the time.
