Disk Defragmenter – DEFRAG.EXE

Defrag.exe is a utility that has shipped with Microsoft Windows and even MS DOS. There are many versions of this program, they're not all interchangeable. Defrag is short for "Defragment". Windows tries to use all of the space on your hard drive. If there isn't enough space to save a program in one hunk, it will save parts of the program in different places.

When you delete files, new spaces are opened. After a great deal of saving and deleting, you end up with most of your programs fragmented. This can make them take longer to load as they have to be located a put back together. The solution is to defragment the drive. During this process, programs are read, sorted and resaved so that each program, if possible, is saved in one continuous hunk.

If you want Windows to tell you when your hard drive is fragmented and offer to defrag it for you, leave this file in place. If you don't mind starting your defrag utility via Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools, then it can be removed.
