Multiple Programs – FIND.EXE

Find.exe is a utility that comes installed with your Windows Operating System. Find.exe is used to find files. Findstr.exe is used to find strings (words or phrases) in files. You'll find more information at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/100012. If you notice that find.exe returns extra lines when piped, you'll find a fix at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262463. This instance of find.exe is safe to have around. It should not need to be running all the time.

Find.exe also installs with the W32.Opanki worm. This instance of the file will appear in your Windows folder. This IRC worm spreads through AOL Instant Messenger and could allow a remote user to access your system. You'll find more information at http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2005-051810-1834-99&tabid;=2. We'd recommend removing this file using WinPatrol. First, kill it under Active Tasks then remove it from your Startup Programs and/or IE Helpers. If running WinPatrol 8.x or later, right click the file then select "Delete file on Reboot". Finally, reboot your system.
