Acer Launch Manager – KEYHOOK.EXE

A file called keyhook.exe is part of the Acer Launch Manager. This software came preinstalled on Acer desktop and notebook systems. The launch manager includes special launch keys to launch your web browser, default email program, and up to 3 other hotkeys you can program yourself. This software was first used by Acer on Windows 98 systems. If you have this instance of the file, you'll find it in c:\Program Files\Acer\Launch Manager\KeyHook.exe. If you don't use these special keys, you can remove this file.

If you find an instance of keyhook.exe in your windows or system folder, it may be part of a keylogger program. More information on how keloggers work can be found at http://www.diamondcs.com.au/processguard/index.php?page=attack-keystroke-loggersP. Keyloggers can be useful in keeping track of what your kids do online. So if you installed such a program, that's fine. Unfortunately, they can also be used by others to track things such as passwords or credit card numbers that you type at the keyboard. If you have a keylogger that you didn't install, we'd recommend removing it using WinPatrol.
