Disk Defragger – MMC.EXE
MMC.EXE installs with Windows XP Home and Professional versions, Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advaned Server, Microsoft SNA Server, Microsoft SQL Server, NT 4.x, and NT Server.
MMC.EXE is run to defragment your hard drive. Programs are stored on your hard drive very economically. If there isn't space to save an entire program in one spot, some of the programs will be saved in multiple locations. When you run that program, the hard drive goes to each of those locations to reconstruct the program. After a while, this can result in slower drive access. Running a defragmetation (defrag) utility will reorganize your hard drive so entire programs are stored contiguously. This process is often referred to as "defragging".
A common problem involves an Access Violation Error Message in Mmc.exe After You Apply Internet Explorer Privacy Update from Q316116 or After You Apply Internet Explorer 6 SP1. The solution is covered in this Microsoft Knowledgebase article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325666.
