File Sharing Utility – NET.EXE
NET.EXE is a DOS command line utility that can be used to setup file sharing across a network. You'll probably find it in your \windows\system32 folder. You can use the NET VIEW command to display the names of the computers in any workgroup; use this command to view the computers in a workgroup: NET VIEW /WORKGROUP:wgname. Or this command to view the shares on any computer: NET VIEW \\compname. (Replace the wgname and compname variables with a workgroup name and a computer name respectively.)
If you do your network management within Windows, then you don't need this file. There's a vast amount of inaccurate information circulating about this file. One example is a claim that the FBI uses this file to spy on people.
