Multiple Programs – PING.EXE
Ping.exe is the Microsoft Ping Utility. It installs with the Microsoft Windows operating system and provides basic network testing functions for your LAN or the Internet. This process involves sending a signal to a network or Internet IP address then waiting for a reply. This can be useful in seeing if your network or Internet connection is configured correctly. This is a command line utility most often accessed via Start > Run. More information on using the Ping utility can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300986&sd;=tech.
Similarly named utilities are available in Unix and Linux.
Some third party programs use a file by this name that is specifically designed to defeat online inactivity timers by pinging the remote site at regular intervals. Once such utility is KeepAlive. More information can be found at http://keepalive.sourceforge.net/.
