Multiple Programs – RS.EXE

Rs.exe is the Report Server Scripting Utility from Microsoft. Typically this utility isntalls with Microsoft's SQL Server software. You'll find more information at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa256617(SQL.80).aspx.

Rs.exe is the executable for the Reed Solomon (RS) error correction Decoder by Dave Jones. It is used to decode Digital SSTV files. You'll find more information at http://www.tima.com/~djones/rsdecoder.htm.

Rs.exe also installs with the PurityScan, PurityScan.a, or Purityscan.b adware program also referred to as PuritySweep. You'll probably find them in your Windows\System or System32 folder. PurityScan promises to clean "hidden pornography" from your system. In this instance, the file is intentionally downloaded and installed. It also comes bundled with some P2P file sharing programs such as Grokster. It generates popup ads, it can update itself, and it can install other adware or spyware programs. You'll find more information at http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.purityscan.html. If you have this malicious instance of the file, we'd recommend removing it using WinPatrol. First kill it under Active Tasks then remove it from your Startup Programs. If running WinPatrol 8.x or later, right click the file then select "Delete file on reboot".

Because rs.exe is a short and common name, it's possible that other programs are using it.
