Multiple Programs - MMTASK.EXE

We found multiple programs using the name Mmtask.exe. It is important to note that mmtask.exe and mmtask.tsk are completely different and unrelated programs. mmtask is part of the BackGate trojan. Mmtask.tsk is part of your Windows Operating System.

Mmtask.exe installs with MusicMatch Jukebox 8.x. If you have this instance of the file, it will appear in C:\Program Files\musicmatch\musicmatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe. This is a legitimate file. For more information, please visit http://www.musicmatch.com.

The presence of mmtask.exe on your system may indicate that you have the "BackGate" Trojan. This trojan consists of mmtask.exe, settings.reg, and vmload.vxd. Mmtask.exe is a copy of the legitimate WinGate program packed with the UPX compressor. Vmload.vxd loads the mmtask.exe at startup. Settings.reg contains registry settings that allow anyone to use trojanized computer to access the Internet. The 4080 DAT set will detect legitimate copies of the Wingate program as a trojan. It is important to mention that this is a hacked copy of WinGate. The WinGate program itself is perfectly legitimate and not a virus. This program was created by QBik at http://www.qbik.com and is supported at http://www.wingate.com. So it is MMTASK.EXE that you want to remove. If you have the legitimate WinGate running on your system, that can remain.
