Multiple Programs - MATCLI

MATCLI.EXE comes preinstalled on many Compaq or HP PCs. It is a "motive Assistant Command line interface", part of the Compaq KNowledge Center. It gathers information about your system's identity like your name email address, city, state, etc and writes thsi information to a log file. A companion program called silent.exe executes matcli.exe quietly in the background.

This file can be removed but doing so may cause problems. The Compaq Knowledge Center is required to run with the Help and Support program. If you uncheck Compaq Knowledge Center and and then try to run help and Support it will add another Compaq Knowledge Center in the startup menu thereby loading another instance of these files.

Matcli.exe also installs as part of the Verizon Online Support Center. If you have this instance of the file, it will probably appear in this folder: C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\SupportCenter\bin\matcli.exe.

This instance of the program gathers data on your PC and broadband connection that Verizon can use to help resolve problems. Some people like this area while others consider it a threat to their privacy. The good news is that this file is optional for Verizon customers. If you'd like to get rid of it, just maximize WinPatrol and click the Startup Programs tab. Select this file then select "Disable". We'd recommend using Disable instead of Remove so that the file could be re-enabled should you ever wish to do so.

A file performing a similar function installs with NTL World Broadband. More information can be found at http://www.ntlworld.com/.
