Symantec LiveConnect – PIFSVC.EXE

Pifsvc.exe and pifeng.dll install with Norton LiveConnect service. This is an add-on product for Antivirus and Norton Internet Security 2006 and is built into Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security 2007. These files support the Symantec PIF Alert Engine used by LiveConnect. You'll find the files in your c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\ folder (number may vary). These files will run on system startup if you have LiveConnect turned on.

LiveConnect alerts you when a major upgrade is available on the Symantec website. Some find this useful. Because it installs and updates silently, some consider the service to be borderline adware. Still others find the files obtrusive, blaming them for slowing down web browsing.

If you want LiveConnect to do its thing, leave these files in place. If not, they can be removed from your Startup Programs and IE Helpers using WinPatrol.
