Multiple Programs – BIT1.TMP

The "bit" in bit1.tmp stands for "background intelligent transfer service". This file may appear in a folder called something like "c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\S-1-5-18\eb11e91d135b62e3fc8d6f37f251deee\" (number may vary). We've seen users report that this service is in use by Google Updater. Google Updater is a program that downloads and installs all the software in the Google Pack. You can use Google Updater to monitor the status of your installation, run software that has been installed, or uninstall software. Some users report that this file is also in use by Windows Live Messenger 8.x or later and is used to check for updates. In some cases, multiple instances of this file may be created (bit2.tmp, bit3.tmp, etc).

While it's possible to disable these files using WinPatrol, a more permanent solution may be to turn off the notification or update feature in the program that is creating them.
