Windows Notepad - NOTEPAD.EXE

NOTEPAD.EXE is the executable for Windows Notepad. This small and handy text editor ships with all versions of the Windows operating system. It can be found via Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Or you can launch it by going to Start, selecting 'Run' then type 'notepad' (without the quotes).

You should only see Notepad running when you have the program open. It doesn't need to be running on your system all of the time.

This Microsoft Knowledgebase article describes how to open any text file into Windows Notepad by simply right-clicking: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;193717.

Here are some fixes to common problems:
"NOTEPAD caused an invalid page fault in module NOTEPAD.EXE at [address]" error message when you try to start Notepad - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/218609.

Notepad Appears to Hang When You Open Large Files - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314235.

Cannot View Source in Internet Explorer - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154168.

It should be noted that the W32/QAZ.worm is known to rename the real notepad.exe to note.com then write its own code to notepad.exe. This worm runs on system startup, spreads over weakly protected networks, communicates with its controlling server, and can allow a remote user to access your system. You'll find more information at http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus;_k=98775. If you have this malicious instance of the file, we'd recommend removal using WinPatrol. First, kill it under Active Tasks then remove it from your Startup Programs. If running WinPatrol 8.x or later, right click the file then select "Delete file on Reboot".
