WinPatrol: Delayed Start

One commonly requested feature is to be able to change the sequence order of startup programs. Many times, we all want one program to have priority and start before other programs. Since Windows doesn't provide any way to accomplish this request we've made it possible for WinPatrol to launch programs at Startup and by delaying some programs more than others it provides a way to prioritize those programs which are more important.

The main advantage of Delayed Start is to improve your system startup time. Most programs don't need to run immediately so by delaying them a short time Windows can spend more of its time initializing system features like network sharing or other tasks that allow us to connect to the Internet quicker. Some programs you do want running in the background but you don’t need them to launch immediately on boot up. These programs may be be moved to WinPatrol’s Delayed Startup

To Delay the startup of programs go to the WinPatrol Startup Program list.
Select a program title and Right-click
On the menu that pops up select, "Move to Delayed Start Program list".
WinPatrol will even allow you to select multiple programs on the list to make moving quick and easy.

To return programs to the normal Startup list, use "Right-click" and select "Restore program to Startup List".
If you Uninstall WinPatrol we recommend using our own Uninstallers so Delayed Start programs can be moved back to the Windows Startup programs. If you use a 3rd party uninstaller be sure to move any programs you still want to run on Startup.

Delay Options

This button will allow you to set a specific delay time for programs that you want running soon after startup. The launch time is based on the time once WinPatrol has opened. You can also specify parameters for any programs and a user friendly title to be displayed. As an additional feature you may also specify the program be launched as an Administrator. When running as an Administrator you may require addition permissions that will generate the User Control Access window.

Add

This button allows you to Add a new program to the list of programs that will always start when you reboot or logon to your computer. When you click Add you'll see the standard Windows Open dialog which will allow you to navigate to the folder where your program is located.

Remove

This button will not delete any programs from your hard drive. It just removes programs from the Delayed Start list so the program will no longer run when your system boots up. If you still want this program in your normal Windows Startup Programs list you should "Right-click" on the selected program and choose "Restore Program to Startup Programs list".
If you Uninstall a program it won't know about WinPatrol. You'll want to Remove any programs which no longer exist on your system or WinPatrol will continue trying to launch it.

Info...

WinPatrol provides additional information on Programs, including the company that created the program file as well as the program version. Most legitimate files will usually include copyright and company information that can be displayed by WinPatrol, when available. When it does exist, this information will help you decide if the program is a valid program or not and whether you want to Remove, Disable or keep it.
Some Info screens have additional functionality depending on the type.

As it is often difficult to tell just from a file name or company name whether a program is legitimate, you can click the PLUS Info... button to learn more about a program. Access will connect you to the online WinPatrol database for more information including information collected by the decisions of other WinPatrol fans. WinPatrol PLUS upgrade is required to access the PLUS Info... button.

Close

To close or Exit the WinPatrol tab interface click the X in the upper right hand corner or the Close button. WinPatrol will continue monitor changes but the main interface will be removed from memory.

Reoccurring Startup Programs

Many programs think they’re special and should always be added to the Windows Startup Program list. Examples include Apple’s QuickTime and Microsoft’s CTFMon.exe. When you move these programs to the WinPatrol Delayed Startup they may continue to be added to the normal Startup Programs list. The WinPatrol Disabled button was created to automatically remove reoccurring programs from returning to the Startup Program list. After moving one of these programs to the Delayed List, you may still have to Disable them in the Startup Program list. Scotty will keep them from being started immediately at boot time.

Programs and Related Services

Some programs may not work in a delayed manner. We have run into a few programs which run along with a complementary Windows Services. Some Services may complain if they don’t find their associated Startup Program running. Windows Defender in Vista is one example we’ve found.
Some Internal Windows Startup Programs may not be delayed. WinPatrol will not allow these programs to be moved to your Delay List.
